Instrumentation, and Applications of Gel Permeation Chromatography (GPC) in the Characterization of Polymeric Materials

"Gel Permeation Chromatography (GPC)," also known as size-exclusion chromatography (SEC), is a powerful analytical technique used predominantly for the separation and characterization of polymers and macromolecules. The fundamental principle is that molecules are separated based on their **hydrodynamic volume** (their effective size in solution), rather than their chemical composition, charge, or polarity. As the sample passes through a column packed with porous beads (the stationary phase), smaller molecules can penetrate the pores more easily and thus travel a longer, slower path, while larger molecules are excluded and pass through quickly, allowing for the precise determination of molecular weight distribution.

GPC is indispensable in polymer science because the mechanical and physical properties of a polymeric material, such as strength, flexibility, and melt flow index, are directly influenced by its molecular weight average and its distribution (polydispersity). The data generated, typically expressed as number-average ($\bar{M}_n$) and weight-average ($\bar{M}_w$) molecular weights, is critical…
